Tracey Kendall V's Tal Rosner

Here I am going to write about both practitioners, Tracey Kendall who deals with wallpaper and specialises in screen printing and Tal Rosner who comes from a graphics background and makes moving pictures using music to accompany the motion .  I have already written about the lectures I attended a while back, the difference here is that i am going to make comparisons between the nature of their work.

The first apparent thing between Tracey Kendall and Tal Rosner is that they come from very different backgrounds.  Kendall works with elements that she finds or designs in order to make a print whereas Rosner deals with moving image, something that can not be still and appreciated in the same way.  One thing that they do share is their use of photography.  As practitioners they are able to gather ideas through pictures that are taken by themselves from all around, the use of a camera is important to both as a source of inspiration.  They differ in the way that Rosner will use a video camera to create movement, for Kendall this is unnecessary, she would much rather create a feeling of movement through the use of light or pattern or fabric.  She made it very clear that it is very important as a designer to constantly ask questions and this way you can continue to push your ideas to the limit.

Kendal spoke about the fact that men dominate the interior trade, for this reason she chooses more masculine colour schemes and minimalistic themes such as single elements that are strong and charismatic. This works well for her as her work sells at shows and stands out amongst the male designers. Looking at Rosner's work he uses strong masculine images that appeal to both male and female, he uses music to help give an energy that intrigues and captures the audience.

They both gather their inspiration in a similar way even though the outcomes are much different.  Inspiration is sourced through eclectic findings when they are going about normal day to day life.  Both artists enjoy spontaneity and i think that this comes through in their work.  Kendal collects random findings and stores them away for a rainy day where she will look through and pull out things she may find as a useful source of inspiration for that particular time.  When she spoke about doing this it reminded me that it's something i should do more of because i like working in this kind of way.  I like the spontaneous nature of it, you could also link random found objects together and come up with something you would never have thought of.

The use of symmetry is something that appeared frequently in Rosner's imagery, it seemed as though this was an important element in his work coming from a background of graphics.  Kendal too has to consider this in her wallpaper designs, the use of repeat pattern is another aspect that appears to be an important part of their work, Rosner uses this in Doppelganger which was video footage taken from being on a train and seeing the journey outside the window.  He uses symmetry and pattern to create abstract images that move and give a real sense of urbanity and rural, organic impact.  These alluring images suit the sound of  irregular and abstract beats.  The music adds an exciting element to his visionaries. and keeps you enticed.

Rosner has worked with television,  he was approached by a series called Skins which is a channel on E4 because they had seen his work and liked it.  He did the intro to the first series using video alongside the theme music and then was asked to do the second series.  This type of work isn't something that Kendal would get involved with as she attracts fashion and interiors the most.  She writes a regular column in a magazine, this is a good way for her to promote what she does as an artist.  Kendal makes the odd installation as a conceptual piece of work like the chair she covered in buttons for an exhibition during her M.A.  This is something that Rosner does not do however he does work with concepts.

They both made a point of saying that work seems to come to them quite naturally, all of a sudden it just began to happen naturally.  Maybe this is because after all their hard work they are becoming much more noticed by professionals around them and they are just being modest! But putting this comment into perspective i can see how a positive outlook can create a good impact in your work and make it attractive to the outside world.  i suppose confidence is the key.

They both work for themselves and totally depend on their own motivation in order to get work.  Rosner first worked for someone else when he graduated and used this as a stepping stone and Kendal worked in a school first before setting out independently.  They both much prefer being self employed, being there own boss.  Now that they have both become quite successful they are able to generate regular work and both have built in confidence within themselves as practitioners.  Both artists emphasised that it takes time to build a good profile and you have to work hard to keep up a good reputation and consistent body of work, this strengthens your ability to seek and find good relationships with people and keep involved with regular work, also once you make a good impression with someone they will always remember you.
